Analyst: Lowcountry ‘makes sense’ for Boeing 787-10 production

North Charleston is a strong contender to produce and assembly the 787-10, which has a fuselage that may be too long to be ferried from the Lowcountry to Puget Sound.

“It makes sense to keep production and assembly of the 787-10 exclusively in Charleston,” said Saj Ahmad, an aerospace analyst, in an email. “You may argue that the price of this move may well be that the 787-9 is only exclusively built in Everett; however, both 787 production lines are designed to build any number of variants simultaneously, so it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that Charleston could end up making all three models of 787 before the decade is out.” [Read more...]

Release – Election Ballot Fix Set to Become Law

Conference Report securing Democratic Elections headed to Gov’s Desk Other laws to be reviewed so this doesn’t happen again

(Columbia, SC) – After last year’s SC Supreme Court ruling removed hundreds of candidates from election ballots across our state, lawmakers made fixing this ballot filing issue a top priority.  Today, well ahead of next year’s elections, the SC General Assembly followed through on its commitment to secure our state’s free and democratic election process by approving a Conference Report on the Election Reform Bill (S. 2).

The Conference Report – a final step in a bill’s legislative process – combines House and Senate versions of the Election Reform Bill into one finalized Act that, once Ratified, will be delivered to the Governor’s Desk for enactment.

Patriots Point to welcome 9 millionth visitor

Patriots Point will welcome its 9 millionth visitor sometime Thursday with a slew of prizes valued at nearly $2,500.

Because the event is a surprise, the lucky visitor will not be announced or know about the milestone until one hour after his or her arrival. The event will take place in hangar bay 3 of the World War II-era aircraft carrier Yorktown, the nation’s first aircraft carrier museum. The Competitiveness Ranking here is a broader measure of state competitiveness than the number of announced projects, though that is a strong indicator of future job creation. It includes several New Plant Database criteria (see the index methodology sidebar), which reflect announced capital investment in total and per capita. It also includes other gauges of states’ strength, such as the number of National Career Readiness Certificates according to the Workforce Development Division of Atlanta-based ACT, administrator of the Certified Work Ready Communities initiative.

Boeing CEO Jim McNerney calls N. Charleston 787 campus “a big deal”

Boeing’s top executives heaped praise on the North Charleston 787 complex during the company’s annual investor meeting held on Kiawah Wednesday morning, while broadcasting sharp challenges, including to its suppliers and main competitor, Airbus.

“We’re glad you could see it for yourself yesterday,” CEO Jim McNerney told the gathered analysts, referring to Tuesday’s tour of the local factories. “It’s a big deal. It took a long time, but we’re on the other side now.”

S.C. unemployment rate hits lowest mark in 5 years

South Carolina’s jobless rate in April dropped to its lowest level in nearly five years, the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce reported today.

April’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate slipped to 8%, down from 8.4% in March. Nationally, the unemployment rate in April was 7.5%.

“The 0.4% decrease from March marks the largest month-to-month drop since May 1987, and the number of South Carolinians finding work continues to increase each month,” said John Finan, the agency’s administrator. [Read more...]
