Release – House Approves Restructuring Reform to let Governor Appoint SC’s Adjutant General

Adds accountability; takes politics out of top Military post

(Columbia, SC) – After last November’s election, where voters overwhelmingly approved a House-led plan to change the way our state’s Lt. Governor is chosen, the House is advancing another major government restructuring reform.  Today, the SC House passed a plan that will allow the Governor to appoint a qualified candidate to become our state’s Adjutant General upon Senate confirmation.

“Our state’s top Military post should be filled by the most qualified candidate, not by the most politically successful one,” House Speaker Bobby Harrell said.  “This government restructuring reform will protect the integrity of this important position by replacing political qualifiers with benchmarks of Military leadership and experience.  Currently, our state’s highest Military Officer can be duly filled by someone with absolutely no Military experience – that needs to change.” [Read more...]

Newsletter – Competitive Tax Reform and Agenda Update‏

Dear Friend,

Last year, our state Legislature successfully cut Small Business Income Taxes by 40%. This session, we’re renewing our fight for a True Comprehensive Tax Reform Plan.
For the 2nd year in a row, a study by one of America’s most relied-upon conservative fiscal policy organizations, The Tax Foundation, ranked South Carolina as having the lowest tax rate in the nation (see for yourself here: The 2011 Tax Rankings & The 2012 Tax Rankings). South Carolinians are now the lowest taxed citizens in America due in large part to the $26 Billion in state tax cuts we’ve passed since 1994 – the year our state’s voters first elected a GOP Majority in the House.

Release – Lowest Taxes ≠ Most Competitive Taxes

House Tax Reform Package aims to make SC’s lowest-in-the-nation tax rate more competitive

(Columbia, SC) – As the S.C. House of Representatives continues its push for comprehensive tax reform this session, for the second year in a row, a study by The Tax Foundation ranked South Carolina as having the lowest tax rate in the nation per capita (see the 2011 year’s rankings here & the 2012 rankings here).  This lowest in the nation tax ranking is due in large part to $26 billion in state tax cuts that have become law in South Carolina since 1994.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell said, “With our General Assembly having successfully passed $26 billion in tax cuts, South Carolinians are the lowest taxed citizens in the nation.  However, the lowest overall tax rate doesn’t always equate to the most competitive tax structure.  While having the lowest taxes in the nation is a good thing and is a standing we will fight to preserve, we are also committed to comprehensive tax reforms that will make our state even more competitive.”

Release – Speaker Harrell Comments on the Passing of Ted Stern

Transformational Leader & Philanthropic Servant will be remembered for the great institutions he built and the many lives he touched

(Columbia, SC) – After having just celebrated his 100th birthday last month, Ted Stern passed away today, January 18th, 2013.

In 1968, upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Ted Stern was appointed the 16th President of the College of Charleston.  Joining the Naval Reserves in 1940 Stern quickly rose through the ranks.  Stern’s Naval career was an inspiring journey that took him from combat on the front lines, to personally briefing President Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Chief of Naval Operations in charge of petroleum, to arriving in Charleston in 1965 as a 53-year-old Navy Captain to head the Navy Supply Center.

As President of the College of Charleston, Stern initiated the monumental transformation that enabled the college to become the internationally recognized institution it is today.   A struggling small private school with only 432 students enrolled and 28 faculty members would become an official State Institution of Higher Learning with an enrollment of more than 5,300 students by the time Stern’s decade-long term as President came to an end.

House GOP Agenda Focuses on Government Reform

Data Security, Election, Ethics, Tax, and Restructuring join Jobs on 2013 Agenda

COLUMBIA – Broad government reform tops the House Republican Caucus agenda for South Carolina in 2013, presented to members of the S.C. Press Association today at the Statehouse.
“This is a smaller agenda than we have had in previous years because many of these items are very serious topics that will require a lot of debate,” said House Majority Leader Bruce Bannister, R-Greenville. “The Caucus and the House have study committees that have been working for months—or years—on some of these issues. This session will be marked by significant action on government reform.”
